Recently several female SF/F authors, including myself, have received similar emails from a writer in India, a Dr. L. Prakash. This email praises a story written by the recipient, asks where more can be found, and includes a piece by the writer, along with an offer to send more.
The writer is up front about being currently imprisoned for “running adult web sites.” Trigger warning - A search on his name indicates that he is more than simply a victim of harsh obscenity laws.
It appears – although “appearance” is not proof – that his self-promotional emails are directed at women. His motives might range from simple self-promotion to the more nefarious.
I’m posting this in case anyone reading has received an email from L. Prakash. How people respond to such communications is a matter of personal choice. After wrestling with my instincts to be “nice*” I’ve listened to a deeper instinct and blocked his address.
*Regarding “nice” – in general, it’s good to be “nice,” as in generally courteous to one’s fellow human beings. But for me and countless other women it’s a struggle not to be self-destructively “nice.”
